1.4 Study Area :

The study area is situated near the middle part of Bangladesh and includes Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj district. It is located at 23.5361N , 90.2916E.It has 36344 households and total area is 202.89 kmsqu. Total land area is 235974 acres (954 km2), out of which 138472 acres (560 km2) are cultivable and 5609 acres (23 km2) are fallow land. It has no forest area. 40277 acres (163 km2) of land is irrigated while 26242 acres (106 km2) of land is under river. It has 14 rivers of 155 km passing through.

The area has a well communication with Dhaka and its surroundings by road. All the Unions are connected with upazila by metalloid roads and are connected to a network of internal roads.

1.5 Climate

Bangladesh has tropical monsoon climate with significant variations in rainfall and temperature throughout the country. Like other parts of Bangladesh, the study area experience four season: the pre-monsoon (March-May) has the highest temperature and suffers the maximum intensity of cyclonic storms, especially in May; the monsoon (June-September) when the bulk of rainfall occurs; the post monsoon (October-November) which is like the pre monsoon season but relatively less hot; and the cool and sunny dry season (December-February).

The mean annul temperature is about 25 deg cel. Humidity ranges between 60% in the dry season and 98% during the monsoon.

Average annul rainfall over the country is 3000mm with the lowest in the centre-west (1250mm) and increasing towards north, east and south. The average rainfall in the study area is about 2000mm.

Introduction

1.1 Background

In Dhaka city, Water crisis is a matter of both water scarcity and water quality. For supplying safe water WASA is going to set up a water treatment plant at Jashaldia point of Munshiganj  with a capacity of supplying 45 crore litters of water per day.

An agreement have been signed between Dhaka WASA and China CAMC Engineer Com Ltd in this regard. CAMC will construct the plant in 42 months. The plant would reduce to a large extent city people’s dependency on ground water. Water from the Padma river would get treated at the plant and then pass through 33-km long pipe lines to the distribution lines near Mitford Hospital before it is supplied in Dhaka city.

Metalic pipe is corrosive. Pipeline leakage can be occurred by soil corrosion. The leakage can interrupt supplying water. PVC tap wrapping is the usual method adopted for controlling corrosion of pipelines which are laid in moist environment.
