Immigration is when people come and live permanently in a foreign country. Currently there is a big issue on if the the federal government or the state should be in control. The best party that should control immigration is the federal government. Some reasons are because states have proved that they should not make their own laws on immigration, businesses will take advantage of the immigrants and states could make unfair decisions against immigrants. Some states in the US have proved that the state should not make their own laws on immigration. For example, a federal judge had to block Texas’s immigration law targeting against sanctuary cities because it conflicted with the federal law. The law authorized local police to ask about immigration status during routine stops, and threatened police chiefs with misdemeanor charges and fines if they fail to enforce federal laws. This shows how some states can make decisions that can affect many people and also how the federal government can stop something bad from happening. This also shows how the federal government can make better choices than the state government. This means the federal government is better at taking care of Immigration. (Hesson) If the states controlled immigration, businesses will take advantage of the immigrants by using us their status to threaten them to do things. For example, in Ohio, Case Farms, a well known company, hired undocumented immigrants and then used their status to pressure them into staying silent about life-altering injuries and workplace abuse. This was stopped by the federal government and federal health inspectors have alleged for hundreds of violations and fined them millions of dollars. If the federal government wasn’t there, this issue would not be stopped since the state stayed quiet about it. This shows how the state cannot protect immigrants and treat them fairly. It also shows how the federal government did it’s job to protect the people better than the state, since the state didn’t do anything about it. (Bonderenko)States could make unfair decisions against immigrants that can affect them a lot. For example, the Arizona senate bill 1070, which allowed officials to stop a person on the street and ask for their immigration status if they seemed suspicious of being here illegally. This was profiling and the supreme court had to step in and put an end to that because it was racial profiling and would lead to harassment towards spanish speaking residents. This shows how a decision the state made could affect not only immigrants but everyone since most people will be stopped. This also shows that the federal government has better ideas on how to stop things and help the immigrants and the citizens. (Find Law) Overall, the federal government should control immigration and not the state. One reason is because states have proved that they should not make their own laws on immigration. Another reason is because businesses can take advantage of immigrants. Finally, states can make unfair decisions against immigrants.
